IFZA activity register
Trade licence activities in IFZA
The short answer
IFZA's Trade licence family covers 437 of the 824 activities on the free zone's register, grouped on IFZA's own site under what it calls a Commercial Licence. It spans buying, selling, importing, exporting and distributing goods, running from General Trading through to narrowly written categories such as Construction & Building Materials Trading or Auto Spare Parts & Components Trading. It sits alongside a separate Service family โ IFZA's Professional Licence โ reserved for activities that are not based on moving physical goods. Velarozone advises on which Trade activities fit a given business and prepares the application; IFZA assesses it and issues the licence.
The International Free Zone Authority (IFZA) is one of Dubai's broad-purpose free zones, used by consultants, service businesses and small trading companies alike. Office arrangements for an IFZA company typically run from a flexi-desk through to a dedicated serviced office, with visa allocation tied to the office package and premises held. A standard IFZA free zone licence also carries the zone's usual renewal cycle, an immigration file for staff visas, and the UAE corporate tax registration obligation that applies to businesses operating across the Emirates.
IFZA's own register splits activities into two families. The one covered here is sometimes described as the Trade family and sits under what IFZA's website labels a Commercial Licence: 437 of the zone's 824 registered activities, built around buying, selling, importing, exporting and distributing goods. The separate Service family, which IFZA presents as its Professional Licence, covers the remaining 387 activities for work that is not based on moving physical goods, such as consultancy, design or technology services.
Within the Trade family, General Trading sits as its own entry rather than a shortcut through every other trading activity. Most of the remaining entries are written narrowly, by product category: Construction & Building Materials Trading, Auto Spare Parts & Components Trading, Mobile Phones & Accessories Trading and Goods Wholesale Trading are examples drawn from IFZA's own register. A company's actual trade in goods needs to match one or more of these named activities, not a general description of what it buys or sells.
A worked example helps: a founder who sources tiles, sealants and other building supplies from overseas manufacturers and resells them to UAE contractors is dealing in physical goods, so Construction & Building Materials Trading is the natural named activity, with General Trading added if the product range is broad enough to need it. The same founder would not need anything from IFZA's Service family, since they are reselling materials rather than advising on their use โ a Professional Licence activity such as Management Consultancy would not match what the business actually does. A consultancy advising contractors on which materials to specify, by contrast, has no goods changing hands and sits in the Service family instead, even though both businesses work in construction.
Velarozone is an advisory and company-setup firm, not IFZA: we do not issue the licence, and IFZA remains the authority that assesses the application and keeps the official activity register. Our role is matching a business's actual trade in goods to the correct named activities on that register, then preparing and submitting the application on the applicant's behalf. What the Trade classification covers
Activities in this family describe buying, selling, importing, exporting, and distributing physical goods. Each register entry names a product category โ spare parts, building materials, foodstuffs, equipment โ and the licence covers the named category, not goods in general.
That specificity is the point of the register. A licence that says one product category does not quietly cover another, and the description on the licence is what a bank, a customs officer, or a counterparty reads first.
What a trade licence here is structured for
A licence built from this family suits a business whose revenue comes from goods changing hands: import and re-export, wholesale, distribution, or online retail of physical products.
The activity wording should match what you will actually invoice for. Where your product range spans several register categories, the honest licence carries several activities โ leaving one off to simplify the application is the mistake that surfaces later at the bank or at renewal.

What changes the answer
This reflects the register snapshot captured on 25 August 2026, which sets out what distinguishes the Trade family from the rest of IFZA's activity list.
- The Trade family holds 437 of IFZA's 824 registered activities; the remaining 387 sit in IFZA's separate Service family.
- General Trading is listed as one entry within the Trade family and is treated as its own distinct activity, not a catch-all for every other trading category.
- Most Trade entries are written as narrow, product-specific categories โ such as Construction & Building Materials Trading, Auto Spare Parts & Components Trading and Mobile Phones & Accessories Trading โ rather than broad descriptions of a business.
- IFZA's own site groups this family under what it calls a Commercial Licence, distinct from the Professional Licence used for the Service family.
Where this family is a strong fit
- Import, export, wholesale or retail businesses whose goods fall within one or more named Trade activities on IFZA's register.
- Trading companies that want a single Dubai free zone licence covering several related goods categories, built from IFZA's own activity list.
- Businesses already clear on which goods they buy, sell, import, export or distribute, since that is what determines which Trade activities apply.
- Businesses that may also need a service-type activity alongside trading, where IFZA's separate Service family can be checked at the same time.
- Businesses that can answer yes to 'are we selling a physical product' โ that question is the practical test for the Trade family; answering yes to 'are we selling our own time, advice or a digital service' instead points to IFZA's separate Service family.
Where it is the wrong family
- Businesses whose work is advisory, consultancy or otherwise service-based with no physical goods changing hands โ that sits in IFZA's Service family, not Trade.
- Businesses that need to sell directly into the local UAE market without a distributor, which a free zone trade licence on its own does not provide.
- Anyone expecting a single activity name to cover an unrelated mix of goods โ IFZA's Trade entries are written narrowly, by product category, not as a general trading catch-all.

Questions
Frequently asked
- What does IFZA's Trade licence family actually cover?
- It covers the 437 activities on IFZA's register concerned with buying, selling, importing, exporting or distributing goods, including General Trading and narrower categories such as Construction & Building Materials Trading.
- Trade or Service: how do I know which licence family my business needs?
- The practical test is whether the business is buying, selling, importing, exporting or distributing a physical product, or selling expertise, advice or a service with no goods changing hands. The former sits in IFZA's Trade (Commercial) family; the latter sits in its separate Service (Professional) family. Velarozone checks this against the named activity list before applying.
- Is General Trading the same as the other trading activities on the list?
- No. IFZA lists General Trading as its own distinct entry, separate from the more specific, product-based trading activities that sit alongside it in the same family.
- What happens if the goods I deal in don't match a named Trade activity exactly?
- IFZA's Trade activities are written narrowly, so a business whose goods fall between categories, or span several of them, may need more than one named activity rather than a single broad description. Velarozone checks this against the register before applying, rather than leaving it to guesswork.
- Can a licence combine activities from both the Trade and Service families?
- IFZA's structure does not rule this out in principle, but which activities can sit together on one licence depends on the specific activities chosen and is not stated as a general rule.
- Does Velarozone issue the licence?
- No. IFZA issues and administers the licence. Velarozone advises on activity selection and prepares the application on the applicant's behalf.
